Essential Halloween Safety Reminders
While we love the fun of Halloween, safety is vital. Please keep these simple tips in mind for a safe celebration:
1. Bonfire & Fireworks Safety (Keep it Clean, Keep it Safe!)
Bonfires are illegal, and their smoke can be extremely toxic, causing issues for people with breathing problems.
Only attend organised events: This ensures the bonfire is well-built and safe, without nasty materials.
Stay back: If you can feel the heat from a fire, you are too close. Your clothes and costumes are at risk of catching fire.
Bonfire Stockpiling: If you see waste being left out or stashed that could be used for a bonfire, please report it to the Dublin City Council North Central Area Office on 01 222 8870 or via email at northcentral@dublincity.ie.
Fireworks are Illegal: They carry no recognised safety mark and can cause serious, irreversible injuries like burns or blindness. They are also highly distressing for vulnerable people and animals.
2. Costume & Trick-or-Treating Tips
Check your Label: Some costumes are classified as 'toys' and may not meet the usual fire safety standards. Look for a genuine CE safety mark from a reputable dealer.
Avoid Flames: Keep costumes away from all naked flames, including open fires, bonfires and even sparklers. Hairspray is also extremely flammable.
Be Seen: Incorporate a torch or light into your costume for greater visibility to drivers. Also, make sure masks don't restrict your child's vision.
3. Protecting Our Pets 🐶🐱
Fireworks and the general noise of Halloween can be terrifying for our beloved pets.
Keep them inside on Halloween night as they may try to run away.
If your pet gets extremely distressed, chat with your vet about prescribing relaxant medications.
Have a brilliant and safe Halloween! For fire safety concerns or if there is an imminent danger to life or property, always dial 999 or 112.
