11 Dec 2013

Crowds packed the Clasac theatre in Clontarf recently to attend a half day seminar introducing the Millennium of the Battle of Clontarf 1014 entitled “Fact or Fiction? What really happened at the Battle of Clontarf”.

The half day seminar was organised jointly by the Raheny Heritage Society and the Clontarf Historical Society and was held on the 9th November 2013. Three world class speakers presented on various topics; from Viking kings and kingship to Irish kingships at the time of Clontarf 1014 and of course on the Battle of Clontarf itself. The speakers included Dr Clare Downham, senior lecturer in the Institute of Irish Studies in the University of Liverpool, Charles Doherty, Senior Lecturer in UCD School of History & Archives and Dr Sean Duffy, Professor of Medieval History at Trinity College Dublin.

This half day seminar was the first event in a series of exploratory lectures on the Battle of Clontarf, with six further lectures scheduled from January to May 2014.  The event was officially launched by His Excellency Mr Niels Pultz, Danish Ambassador to Ireland.

Conor O’Brien 18th Baron Inchiquinn and Chief of the O’Brien’s also spoke about the upcoming millennium commemorations.
