Clontarf Historical Society talk

07 Mar 2012

St Lawrence Road ClontarfClontarf Historical Society will be giving a talk on Monday 12th of March. The talk, given by Frank Walsh, will tell you all about the land St Lawrence Road is built on and the history of it, including its connections to the Earls of Howth.

It traces the history of the road from the commencement of building works in 1872 to its completion in the early 20th century, and in particular, the construction of terraces on the road (which preceded the current numbering system) with names such as’ The Mall’, ‘Hope’, ‘Aloysius’, ‘Laird’, ‘Victoria’, ‘Zetland’ and others.  The presentation also looks at the history of two particular houses, and finally it examines the Thoms Directory records and what they reveal about Victorian life on the road.

The talk will be held in Parish Resource Centre, St John the Baptist, Clontarf Road.

An annual membership to the Clonarf Historical Society is €20 and prices for individual talks are €4. New members are always welcome.
