RTE's Colm Murray pictured with Sean O'RourkeCongratulations to RTE's Colm Murray on receiving a very richly deserved People of the Year award on Saturday night.

Colm, originally from Moate, is a long-time resident of Clontarf along with his wife Anne and his daughters Kate and Patricia.

The award recognises Colm's contribution to the fight for a cure for Motor Neurone disease, a condition he was diagnosed with in 2010. Colm has spoken out on the need to put more resources into finding a cure and he has also participated in a clinical trial that may help find a cure for future sufferers of this illness.

It was one of the most popular awards on the night and showed the huge affection the public hold for Colm who has been a high profile sports broadcaster for many years covering a wide variety of sports but perhaps especially, his great love, horse racing.

It was therefore appropriate that the award was jointly presented by fellow broadcasting legend, Anne Doyle and well known jockey, Ruby Walsh - both friends of Colm.

Colm's daughter Kate collected the award and spoke very eloquently on behalf of her father including passing on a tip for a race in Listowel. Very appropriate!
