Belgrove Senior Girls triumph in Dublin GAA Cup

18 Dec 2011

Belgrove Girls - 2011 Winners of Corn Austin Finn CupHuge congratulations to Belgrove Senior Girls School, Clontarf who won the Corn Austin Finn Cup last week at Croke Park as part of the Cumann na mBunscol competition.

They first entered the competition back in 2006 and were runners-up in the final which was held in Parnell Park. A team has been entered every year since.

In 2007 they lost at the semi-final stage and in 2008 the girls found themselves once again in the final. Great excitement and anticipation gripped the school. Flags, banners and Santa hats were produced for the big day in Croke Park, where the cup was won and also a prize for best supporters.

Belgrove found themselves back at Croke Park on December 13th for final day to compete in the top division of Cumann na mBunscol, Corn Austin Finn. Once again the supporters, made up of Belgrove Senior Girls and Senior Boys, mams and dads, grannies and grandads came out in force with – banners, pom-poms, flags, santa hats and samba drums!

In freezing conditions the supporters never stopped cheering. Belgrove played into the wind in the first half and were one point up at half time. Under freezing conditions including wind and snow the girls battled on relentlessly against a tough opposition.  The final score was Belgrove 2-4, Scoil Cholmcille 1-1.

It was a true team performance from all 25 girls.

Well done to all the girls, their teachers and mentors.

Congratulations are also due to Belgrove Senior Boys who earlier that day played in the final of the Corn Kitterick Cup for the second year running having won the cup for the first time last year. This time out they lost to Scoil Cholmcille Knocklyon but it was a great effort to make the final again and well done to all concerned.
