A Plea for Patience at the School Gates: Keeping Our Youngest Safe

14 Apr 2026

We all know that the morning rush in Clontarf can be a bit of a whirlwind. Between grabbing that much-needed coffee and heading for the office, the pressure is on. However, a recent article in the Irish Independent has highlighted a worrying situation on Seafield Road West that needs our collective attention.

Fiona Sheridan, the Principal of Belgrove Junior Boys’ School, has shared her concerns regarding "bedlam" during school drop-off and pick-up times. With four schools in the immediate area and roughly 1,000 pupils on the move, the safety of our smallest residents is being put at risk by a minority of impatient drivers.

What’s Happening on Seafield Road?

Principal Sheridan, often found out on the road herself trying to manage the chaos, has reported some unsafe behaviours:

  • Cars frequently block disabled bays, preventing students who actually need them from accessing the school safely.
  • Dangerous U-turns and reversing without looking are becoming common sights.
  • There have even been instances of cars driving onto the path to bypass traffic cones.
  • With children as young as four years old exiting cars directly into traffic, the margin for error is terrifyingly slim.

A Community Effort

We know the vast majority of Clontarf parents and commuters are incredibly mindful, but it only takes one moment of impatience for a tragedy to occur.

Dublin City Council has indicated that while schools like Belgrove are on the list for the Safe Routes to School programme, capacity is currently stretched. In the meantime, the council is encouraging "park and strides", "walking buses", and "cycling buses" to help reduce the number of cars at the gates.

How We Can Help

  1. Observe the Markings: Those yellow zig-zags and disabled bays aren't suggestions; they are there to protect children.
  2. Avoid the U-Turn: It might save you sixty seconds, but the blind spots on Seafield Road are a major hazard.
  3. Park & Stride: If you can, park a few streets away and enjoy a short walk to the gates. It eases the pressure on the school front and gives you a few extra minutes of fresh air with the kids.
  4. Slow Down: When driving near any of our local schools, please keep your speed low and your eyes peeled.

Let's work together to make sure every student gets to their classroom and back home safely every single day.
