Centenary Celebration: 100 Years of Killester Garden Village

26 Aug 2023 - 26 Aug 2023 Killester Garden Village

Killester Garden Village is a unique community consisting of 289 homes spread across the Abbeyfield, Middle Third, the Demesne, and the Orchard areas of Killester. By 1923, they had constructed 247 houses, and a few more homes were added in the Orchard area and through infill projects by 1932.

In 2023, it is celebrating the 100-year anniversary since the completion of the original Killester Garden Village, built between 1920 and 1923 for Irish WW1 ex-servicemen and their families. This estate was initially established by the Local Government Board and later looked after by the Irish Sailors and Soldiers Land Trust. Interestingly, it was developed during both British and Irish administrations.

To mark this centenary, there will be a Centenary Community Day on Saturday, August 26th, at Middle Third green starting from noon. The day will feature live music from two local bands, Irish Dancers, an ice cream van, food stalls, kids' games, face painting, historical displays, participation from local businesses and community groups, and more! Additionally, we'll be officially launching a specially commissioned book titled the "Killester Garden Village Book." This book, researched by two WW1 historians from Northern Ireland, delves into the lives of the 289 original WW1 ex-servicemen and their families who were part of the Killester Garden Village.
